A safe and enjoyable introduction to dinghy sailing
Tackers is a fun introductory, games-based sailing program designed for kids aged 7 to 12 years; an ideal introduction to dinghy sailing. Kids don’t need to have any sailing experience or club membership to participate.
All the equipment, including the boats, are provided. Tackers is delivered in small groups of 6 to 10 boats specifically designed for the program and supervised by Australian Sailing qualified Instructors and Assistant Instructors who are on the water all the time the kids are sailing.
There are three levels that kids can progress through (Tackers 1 is the first level), each level involves around 20 hours of participation structured as a 4 day holiday program or as a series of sessions on a weekly basis.
Each course is focused on having fun, playing games while learning the basics of sailing.
DSC will provide participants with life jackets and boats. We have toilets and change rooms, and water fountains.
However there are a few things you will need to bring with you to ensure safety and fun on the water:
The course can run for 4 full days during the school holiday programs or once a week for 6 weeks during the School term courses.
Preferably water confident, however they will always be wearing life jackets.
Kids sail in pairs in small boats called Oziopti’s. They learn the basics of boat handling, and maneuvering, practice safety drills and how to recover from a capsize. All exercises are incorporated into games so the kids are unaware they are in a lesson, they are just having fun. It’s a great way to meet new friends while mucking about on the water.
If any course that you wish to participate in is fully booked or not scheduled, please email an expression of interest. Click Here
Once your child has passed Tackers 1, they can then move onto Tackers 2 which continues their learning and helps advance their skills in sailing.
The Instructors will be able to give you more information throughout the course if you have any further questions about continuing through the Tackers Program.
