A safe and enjoyable introduction to dinghy sailing
Tackers is a fun introductory, games-based sailing program designed for kids aged 7 to 12 years; an ideal introduction to dinghy sailing. Kids don’t need to have any sailing experience or club membership to participate.
All the equipment, including the boats, are provided. Tackers is delivered in small groups of 6 to 12 boats specifically designed for the program and supervised by Australian Sailing qualified Instructors and Assistant Instructors who are on the water the whole time the kids are sailing.
There are three levels that kids can progress through (Tackers 2 is the second level), each level involves around 20 hours of participation structured as a 4 day holiday program or as a series of sessions on a weekly basis.
Each course is focused on having fun, playing games while learning the basics of sailing.
DSC will provide participants with life jackets and boats. We have toilets and change rooms, and water fountains.
However there are a few things you will need to bring with you to ensure safety and fun on the water:
The course can run for 4 full days during the school holiday programs or once a week during the School term courses.
The skills and experiences outlines in your Tackers 1 certificate
If kids are confident, they can sail a boat on their own. Improving their boat handling skills they learn to gybe, sail a triangle course and do turns. With lots of support, supervision and encouragement from the Instructor the Tackers will capsize and recover their boat unassisted and learn the rules of the road. Using games within the lessons, Tackers have great fun refining their knot skills and identify the parts of the boat and sail.
If any course that you wish to participate in is fully booked or not scheduled, please email an expression of interest to our Training Coordinator at [email protected]
Once you have completed Tackers 2 you can then move onto Tackers 3 also run at the Darwin Sailing Club. Click Here for more information.
