Tackers 3

A safe and enjoyable introduction to dinghy sailing

Tackers 3

Course Details

Tackers is a fun introductory, games-based sailing program designed for kids aged 7 to 12 years; an ideal introduction to dinghy sailing. Kids don’t need to have any sailing experience or club membership to participate.

All the equipment, including the boats, are provided. Tackers is delivered in small groups of 6 to 10 boats specifically designed for the program and supervised by Australian Sailing qualified Instructors and Assistant Instructors who are on the water all the time the kids are sailing.

There are three levels that kids can progress through (Tackers 3 is the third and final level), each level involves around 20 hours of participation structured as a 4 day holiday program or as a series of sessions on a weekly basis.

Each course is focused on having fun, playing games while learning the basics of sailing.

Length of Course

The course can run for 4 full days during the school holiday programs or once a week during the School term courses.

The skills and experiences outlines in your Tackers 1 and 2 certificate

Who should do this course

This course is designed for participants who wish to continue to learn sailing in a dinghy after completing Tackers 1 and 2. All the equipment and gear will be provided to you.

What you will learn

By now our Tackers have learnt the essential skills, so now’s the time to start racing your mates. Refining their techniques to stop, start and accelerate their boat, Tackers can concentrate on getting all the little things right that help to make a boat go faster. Boat balance, sail trim and learning to read the sails is critical when chasing your mates around the course, as is learning start sequences and sailing different shaped courses.

What to Bring

DSC will provide participants with life jackets and boats. We have toilets and change rooms, and water fountains.

However there are a few things you will need to bring with you to ensure safety and fun on the water:

  • Close-toed shoes (no thongs)
  • Hat
  • Water bottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Snacks/Lunch for break (if desired): There is limited space in the Club esky, however if you have your own to keep your lunch cool please bring it along.
  • Stinger suit or leggings (Box jellyfish are still present in the water so protection must be worn at all times)
