Haydyn Clyde Johns
Club Membership number 24149
27/3/49 - 9/12/2017. Aged 68 years.
It is with great sorrow that we inform you the DSC members and friends of the passing of Haydyn Johns after a long battle with cancer. Haydyn was not only a fellow member of the DSC but a past General Manager of the Club on two occasions.
Haydyn came to the Territory with his wife Di and two young children back in 1989 following a hectic yet successful stint with an American catering company servicing all pavilions at Expo88 in Brisbane. An Accountant by profession Haydyn worked in Darwin with Frontier Holidays Group then when they were taken over he moved to the NTFL as Finance Director.
The Darwin Sailing Club was after a General Manager in 1994 and they struck the mother lode when they employed Haydyn. What followed was a very successful period of six years through until 2000. The Johns family then returned to Brisbane when Haydyn was appointed General Manager at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, a position which he held for ten years.
In 2012 we were lucky to get him to come back for a while to assist us on getting the Club back on financial track following a terrible period under the former GM. What began as a 3-6 month term became two years and set our Club back on the successful path to stability that we now enjoy.
Haydyn was from Adelaide, went to Henley High and was a member of the gun R&R crew at Henley SLSC. He sailed on the S80 “Pearler” in the Under 30's in Darwin so that he could know better what sailors want and what their passion was about. He was that sort of person.
We will all now have to try harder in the footy tipping because Haydyn always picked the Gold Coast out of a feeling of loyalty to his new home - and that gave the rest of us a head start!
He was smart, honest as the day was long and just an all round good bloke.
He will be missed by all who knew him and our deepest sympathies go out to his wife of 38 years Diane, his daughter Karlan and his son Doyle.
As many people are away over the Xmas and New Year period the Club will have a Memorial function for Haydyn in the New Year.
Vale our mate Haydyn Johns.
