Sail, socalise and dine in the heart of Darwin
With eight starters, Saturday's March Shoal Short Offshore Race, part of the Arafura Short Offshore Point Score Series, was the best attended DSC short offshore race in recent years. Bob Colman (Red Knot) and Steve Winspear (Vitamin B) promoted the race amongst potential offshore competitors and the turn-out showed the results of event promotion by individual owners.
Competitors faced a range of conditions, with wind speeds up to 25 knots, on a great day for sailing. The race started with most boats flying spinnakers or Code 0's but shortly after clearing East Point, it was too tight for these and genoas or jibs became the sail of choice in a building breeze.
First to round the March Shoal mark was Steve Schortz' X-Factor over 45 minutes ahead of Wallop (Marcus Ilton), while Doug Bell's Honalulu Lulu was next around.
After a brisk run back to th E Buoy finish, line honours went to X-Factor. Next was Ian Pollock's Mai Tai, followed by Wallop.
Final results will be announced at presentation after the Old Man Rock/Bart's Bash race on Sunday.
